Post Office Has Limits

While at the PO today, with 27 books to mail the supervisor informed me they will not accept more then 10 packages from me. If I have more, then, I must finish up the 10 and get back on line. Has anyone ever encountered this? I do intend to call the main branch to ask them... Thanks. Leslea

If you're bringing 27 packages to the PO, why don't you already have Endicia or another postage set up at home?
Seems like it would save you money, time and aggravation.

I've never heard of that before. I live in Massachusetts and have done plenty of shipments of over 10 packages at a time. I would think all of the US post offices would have the same policies but I'm not positive on that. I would definitely call the main branch if I were you because that sounds a little fishy.

As junglebooks just said you can save a lot of time and money using postage from home and I highly recommend that if you sell a lot.

Some of the smaller or satellite branches in NYC have this rule. If you mail from a larger PO branch you will probably not have the problem. I don't know where in town you live but I use Cooper Station even though I have a PO two blocks from from me and I must take a bus or train to get there. I prefer to mail from the PO because they do the weighing and it goes out directly. My favorable feedbacks are about Fast Shipping. If it ain't broke don't fix it.

This thread talks about PO and limits, Leslea: http://www.amazonsellercommunity.com/forums/thread.jspa?messageID=1458403? If you decide to sign up for Endicia.com, you will love it. Print out your postage, drop off your packages in the blue box or by the tub at your PO - no standing in line. I'd appreciate it if you use me as the referrer if you do - Endicia 544553 :> earthmom

Yes, i have heard of this before. I've heard it a lot on ebay threads. They feel the counter is for retail customers, not businesses. Businesses need to handle their (greater) mailing needs otherwise (ie do the postage before you get to the PO and just drop them off). Makes sense to, since standing in line and doing postage for 27 packages at USPS is a colossal waste of time.

If you're bringing 27 packages to the PO, why don't you already have Endicia or another postage set up at home? I have only been at this couple of weeks..I started not knowing that Amazon holds back money. They are holding a sizable amount at the moment and it keeps growing. Right now I am not sure if this is even going to be profitable for me and do not want to expend any more money then I need to. For scale and subscription for doing postage at home. I put money on papal and am waiting till it is there to do shipping assistant. I will try that but I read somewhere if doing media mail you still need to go to Post Office to pay. Is that true? International and APOs require visits to POs. If you live in NYC (I see: NY bookseller) just go to a larger PO and your problems are solved. I have been doing this three years and often have many orders to mail at one time. I have never had this problem at one of the larger branches, but have run into it at the smaller ones.

This is how my friend got around the limit in New York at the branch Post Office. She chatted them up and learned what they liked to read. Surprise it was the penny junk you cant sell for a profit. So when she stopped at the branch with her load of books to ship, she brought a goodie bag for the postal workers. In it she dropped the crap she could not sell, some romance, some on golf or fishing. They loved her at the branch and could not wait to see what goodies she brought them. It may not be fair, but hey it worked for her! But it does entail extra schelping of books on your trip.

Guess I have it easy. My local post office lets me bring my items in through the back door, and Its not a small post office either. It has a very busy front counter. If you want to be successful at this game you MUST do your postage at home. I also run a very successful eBay business and have been using stamps.com for years and love it to death. Saves time and MONEY.

In a way it is fair. Smaller POs or Satellite branchs do not have the number of clerks that larger branches have. Many of them also do not have the automated self postage machines. In my own case the branch I use handles most of the publishing and advertising agency mail in that area. I have gotten to know the clerks and they are all just great to me. I would also strongly advise against dropping your materials in a street mailbox in NYC. You really don't know when they will be picked up or the condition they will arrive in. By mailing from a large PO it is sent within a short time from when you submit it.

I actually bring my two postal clerks treats and goodies. When the one complained he was getting too big around the middle, I brought him cut up veggies and low cal dip! And they in turn save me those very nice small boxes that their roller tape comes in. It is the perfect shape for the very fat paperbacks. They also give me foam type padding, peanuts and some bubble wrap. They have a spot just for my goodies too.
