Amazon Kindle......

I just noticed the Amazon Kindle on the home page. I know this has been talked about for some time and its release is coinciding with Christmas but what are the far reaching implications? Will this affect "New book" sales? Or "Used Book" sales? Those are the obvious questions I'm sure we're all thinking about. But what about how our children will read from here on? Will it be all electronic all the time for convenience reasons? Will this device become the new textbook for our grandchildren? Only 10 ounces and can hold 200 books without any memory upgrades. Can read a large "War & Peace" book on one charge. Can deliver your newspaper automatically early every morning or let you visit blogs. Will this type of device hurt our paper industry?? Hmmmmm So many questions to ponder What are your thoughts for the future of this device....and the imitators that are sure to follow. Happy Book Peddling Kyle

It will; a similar device stopped me from buying any fiction for 2 years straight. I've read approximately 60 books in E-Book format; I read every one on my Sony PDA. Of course, not everything was released as an E-Book, but I chose to read only titles that were. Now that I am selling used books, I buy fiction, but I never pay for than $5 for a title including shipping. In other words, I'm the kind of customer you don't want.

I saw them demonstrate it on GMA this morning. I was impressed because it actually looks like it has the feel of a real book. I liked the fact that you can enlarge the font. As a senior citizen, I long for the days when I could just pick up a book and read without having to hunt down my reading glasses. However, it's a bit too pricey for me. I'm not worried about it having an impact on my sales as I don't have that many "new" best sellers in my inventory. Down the road, I think that is where the impact will be felt. Renee

just curious. do you think college students can use this technology. can you select parts of the text to hi-light or copy for later reference. this could change the way students write research papers. instead of footnotes they could just supply links to the text they are referring to.

This sort of thing always reminds me of the movie A Boy and His Dog. the boy had a collection of cassette looking things that supposedly contained vast stores of knowledge. problem was the devices to read the casettes were disabled. I think ebooks and paper books will co-exist. there seems to be a place for both imho.

OK I've been reading up on the other opportunities that this new device can give. The biggest thing I can see is that this device and the DTP (Digital Text Platform) is going to blow the lid off of the small time author who cant get published. http://dtp.amazon.com/mn/signin ANY AUTHOR FROM ANYWHERE CAN PUBLISH HIS/HER OWN MATERIAL ON AMAZON ELECTRONICALLY AND RECIEVE 35% OF ALL SALES! Do you know what this means?? Authors can now bypass ALL the traditional publishing houses and the expenses of publishing. If an author has access to a word document processor & the internet, then they are able to publish/release thier book or stories and make a living doing it without a middle man....except for amazons cut of course. Theyll go from creation to store front in minutes! NOW THATS COOL! IMO Kyle

enough of "hurting" the paper industry If you like to breathe you should like trees. Here it is, one for the enviornment: Use this for NEWSPAPERS, NOT BOOKS. Save on delivery, slaughtering forests for informationthat only lasts 1 DAY You plug your phone or cel - download the paper, save artilces print coupons Then same thing next day, saves trees saves gas - creates unemploymnet - they can work in another part of the print industry.

"do you think college students can use this technology" Absolutely! Several major schools are looking at switching completely away from physical textbooks. The outrageous prices lately on the 'annual' revision of specific titles is driving the likelihood of early adoptance. Textbooks may well pave the way. Jim

They do this already - it's been going on for many years I've worked with many of them - a lot of them, about 90% call themselves authors cause they self publish - if you read the books/stories - they WANT to be authors - going through traditional publishing houses and editors and publicists they get the education to be an author 2 major publishing houses have already scrapped E-publishing I think this will have very little effect

I do not think it will hurt overall sales. Just look at the past. OMG Television! That will ruin all movie theatres and close them down. Reality: We now have movie theatres that show 10-15 movies in each one. People still go out to see movies and shows. OMG VCR's! That will ruin everything for movie theatres and television. Reality: We still go out for movies and shows. We still spend tons on televisions that do more. OMG Newspapers Online! People will quit buying newspapers. Reality: We might read some of our paper online but we still have a daily subscription sent to our door as well. People are still buying newspapers. With this device, some will buy it and use it to read popular fiction at $9.99 a pop. And even if their library of titles grows it will never cover everything. People will still buy books. Just my two cents Liz

"2 major publishing houses have already scrapped E-publishing" That will probably prove to have been incredibly short-sighted. Jim

"I read War and Peace on a Palm I bought in 2002" I read s-f novels downloaded from Baen Publishing's free elibrary on my elderly Palm IIIc all the time. I am an old time 'bookie' and I have no problem with the format. Once schools realize how much money they will save by adopting a standard 'reader and paying the license fee for the current 'editions', I think widespread adoption will fall into place rather quickly. I'm perfectly content with good ol' fashioned books but I'd sure like something like this to park on my counter for recipes. Not gonna happen at $400 though.
