Damned by faint praise
Posted: Jun 11, 2008 1:26 PM

I know there are those who will say I should not complain about this and if you read this post and think it, please don't say it, but why do some customers leave a feedback such as :  easy transaction 4 of  5, or smooth transaction 4 of 5, or my favorite  - Thanks ! 4 of 5.

If things went so easily, smoothly, or if a customer is so thankful, then what is wrong with 5 of 5 ??

Okay. I'm greedy. I'll admit it, but since this is still a small operation every feedback is important. Sometimes I feel like the Susan Lucci of Amazon Marketplace..... What does a girl have to do to get 5 star feedback around here ???

Perfect analogy Veinard! I guess some customers are the type that nothing is ever perfect.

I know this isn't an answer you want to hear, but be glad for those who leave a 4 when you deserved a 5 because taking a quick peek at your feedback it looks like you have a 4 when you could have had a 3!

Well you could always get feedback like this gem:

5 out of 5: "Although the book was over 30 years old, it was in great condition--no missing pages, etc. My order arrive quickly and was even packaged in bubble wrap."
Date: 5/31/2008

I wonder what her feedback would have been if I sent a book that had a few pages missing?  What does that say about this customers expectations and experiences here at Amazon?

The paperback had 12 copies available, acceptable at .01, good at .32 and my very good condition at $8.99 - currently the very good condition copies are offered by Annabananasearch $14.48 and InternationalBooks $107.95.

I just about fell off my chair when I read that the customer was happy about no missing pages....

AWESOME with your 100% feedback, don't worry about the 4's, although it is a bit frustrating!

If I had those '4s', I would delete your responses to them.

Hi,

I hate to be a little bit "nit-picky", but it appears that you may be "overgrading" your listings just a little tiny bit, and that is perhaps why you are receiving 4"s instead of 5"s.

I don't think I would ever list a "Used" book, CD or DVD as "Like New", also not sure why some of your "Collectible" listings are rated as "Collectible".

(Not quite sure about the "stale cigarette comment" either.)

It is always best to downgrade and have a buyer recieve an item in "better than described" condition, than in "worse than described" condition.

The only items I would ever even think of listing as "Used-Like New", are items that are actually "New" with a few defects.

You're sitting at 100% positive with a 4.9-star average. Just accept that there are some people who won't rate anything as perfect and let it go!

Why do you think I should delete my responses to the 4 of 5 fb's?? I think they are important for prospective customers to see and read, to know that we're on top of things and address customer complaints / issues.

If I were a buyer I've feel more confident buying from a seller who seems to care about customer satisfaction than from one who doesn't.

I don't respond to every 4 of 5 feedback. Just the whiny ones.

I know this question wasn't addressed to me but I did take a look at the responses that you left to those 4/5 customers.  Your responses make you sound defensive, like maybe there was something wrong. It also makes you seem a bit whiny ................... wow, I gave all this "great customer service" and all I got was this 4!

I know the feeling. One recent day we received 3 of those 4 out of 5s all raving about great service. Today we received this gem that left me smiling:

4 out of 5: "It came faster than I ever expected! Highest marks to you, nearcostbooks."

Date: 6/11/2008     Rated by Buyer: Susan C Smith

Highest marks? Hehe.

Well that is one way of the seller saying, you are not God I guess. lol  Some people just can not give a perfect score.

Actually there are a couple of answers (I have been pondering the exact same issue) ... and in the past 2-3 months as I have had to buy a bunch of third party books, and leave feedback, I had a few insights.

1. Some people just find it hard to give a 5 out of 5 no matter what ... and Amazon does not make it clear that if everything went according to plan, that a 5 is deserved.     Check out the new feedback page - while they just "improved" it, it is actually more vague than ever.   Expect more 4's  !!

2. The star-rating system.  If you are a frequent web user, then selecting the 'stars' is an ordinary user GUI function.   But for most buyers, I suspect, it is unusual for them.   I can EASILY see how they can click on a 3 or 4 without giving it much thought.    Amazon really blew it here.  I mean, let's face it - I encounter customers who can't even enter their own names and addresses, let alone a valid email address ... and Amazon expects them to hover over stars and click correctly?!

I have a 100% lifetime over the past 4 years ... but after working with the new FB interface, I fear I may have to kiss that goodbye.    The only consolation (I think)is that my FB response rate has dropped from 20-25% to less than 10% of sales ... and I think it has a lot to do with the new FB interface.
