Feedback Nightmare Averted; Changes Still Made

Feedback Reminder E-mail Changes
Posted: Sep 20, 2006 1:58 PM

Dear Sellers,

Amazon.com recognizes that Amazon Marketplace sellers benefit from timely and complete feedback generated by customers. As such, we are working to increase the response rate to our feedback reminder e-mail message by sending the message closer to the time that orders are delivered. Effective immediately, we are sending feedback reminder e-mails 15 days after orders are placed.
If you have feedback or suggestions regarding this change, please feel free to send an e-mail message to feedback-feedback@amazon.com.

Thank you for selling with Amazon.com!

Oh, and in case you are wondering -- you can comment on these changes:

Note it says "15 days" not "15 business days" and it is after "the order is placed" not after it is supposed to be shipped.

So, I called Seller Support and they confirmed the 15 days, as opposed to business days, and they confirmed that it will be from when the order is placed.

So, if you get an order late Friday and ship it Tuesday (although many of us would ship it Saturday or Monday), your buyer will receive a feedback reminder 10 days after you ship and 8 business days after the order shipped.

This has the potential to be the worst idea Amazon has had since I have been here.

If Amazon wants to give us enough money to ship priority on every order this would work great. Otherwise, this is just a bad, bad idea.

Why is it that every time Amazon does something to punish us, it is presented as if they are responding to our requests, and giving us a little extra help? I read one of these things, and I hear my father telling me, "This is for your own good," as he spanked my bottom.

Well, I feel out of my chair on this one.

I think I will summarize the opinions of those who post to this thread -- without identifying anyone by username or seller name -- and send a feedback feedback to the feedback folks.

I would highly recommend sellers provide feedback via ther notification link. Maybe they will review them and reconsider.

I just send them one myself. A copy of mine is as follows and maybe the time suggestions I gave them is insufficient. Anyway, we need to communicate with them.

"I can see many problems for sending the email this soon. Media mail takes 4 -14 days for delivery. If sold Saturday afternoon the book will most likely be shipped on Monday possibly adding 2-3 days to the USPS 14 days delivery.

I would highly recommend that the email release schedule be 20 days from date of order, otherwise more sellers will get low ratings through no fault of their own.

Please, please reconsider."

Thank you,
Curt

I'm new, so I don't know any better.

All these changes that Amazon is doing, could it be just for the better in the end?!? Could it just be a way of culling out the bad & the ugly from the Great and Best?!?

Like I said, I don't know any better, so I don't see these changes better or worst? I really don't have anything to compare it to!

Susan,

You will spend a lot of time answering questions about where buyers books are, trying to get them to remove negative feedback because they will assume that their book should have arrived by the time they received the email and you'll take a feedback hit.

Suggestions can be sent to:

amazon does not keep me on a server long enough to worry about feedback. if i email them to check my account to make sure i am on a server some strange reason i start selling a few books. then days go by and order count is zero.

This is so darn strange - they do these things like librarylions said as if it will help us, and it appears they have good intentions and they put out the effort to make these changes but..... they never think it through it seems.

Because they have us, a captive audience, how easy would it be if Liz would come on here and notify us early on that this change is being considered and what do we think?  Free focus group?  Well, yes, but everyone would go over it, pros and cons, and dissect the change before it happens.  That could really be critical data for them and they could decide to go forward with it or not.

The problem with the 30 day email reminder was that by then many people had totally forgotten about the order.  Or they forgot how it was packaged, how quickly it was shipped, they get it confused with another order they placed around that time, etc.   The 30 day thing has always been a problem.

But when we are saying "Allow 4 to 14 BUSINESS DAYS for shipment" and they're sending a feedback email at 15 calendar days.... yes that is insane.  How many orders will not even be received yet and here is Amazon prodding people to leave feedback.

*groooooaaaan*

We are all being set up for lots more negatives through no fault of our own because of this new change.

Amazon, why don't you just ask us how this would play out?  We'd be glad to help you see all sides of it BEFORE you do it!

I just send the following email to the address in their post. I would encourage everyone who is against this change to do the same. It may not help, but it can't hurt.

I would like to register my opposition to this change in practice. To send Feedback Reminders before the end of the acceptable shipping window will do nothing but invite bad feedback for sellers who have done nothing but follow Amazon policy. There are problems with the 30 Day Reminder because buyers forget what happened since most packages arrive quickly, however sending the reminders too early will only compound the problem. A better solution would be to not send any reminder at all, but rather allow Marketplace sellers to ask buyers (or not) for feedback at an appropriate interval determined by the details particular to the specific transaction.

Thank you for your consideration.

I strongly recommend that you also cc: jeff@amazon.com  I did.  They need to get flooded with letters about this idiotic decision.

I think I will summarize the opinions of those who post to this thread --

It probably won't help but maybe they could include in their email a reminder about transit times for Marketplace orders and mention something like:

"IF YOU REQUESTED STANDARD SHIPPING,  WE RECOGNIZE YOU MAY NOT HAVE RECEIVED YOUR ORDER YET (STANDARD SHIPPING CAN TAKE UP TO 23 BUSINESS DAYS TOTAL TRANSIT TIME FROM ORDER DATE) BUT BE CREATIVE AND INVENT SOME FEEDBACK-MOST LIKELY THIS IS WHAT YOU WILL DO ANYWAY"

(Well, maybe not the last bit.........)
