Recommend 5-10 Books Every High Schooler Should Read Before College

Anyone want to suggest 5-10 books that they feel an incoming college freshman should have read while in High School (not necesssarily as part of their formal school curriculum).  Reason's for particular books are encouraged, but not required.

I don't have five, but how about two?

1. Huckleberry Finn

2. Silas Marner

Both of these are examples of brilliant books by brilliant authors. Commonly used highschool reading (at least used to be) and there's a reason!

Agreed! The same for Huck Finn.

Five books for a high schooler, before college.

Edward Gibbon: The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire (not only for the history, but for the language: the true nature of "compare and contrast" exposition is found in the wonderful cadences of this work)

Kama Sutra: the high schooler has been thinking about sex since puberty: this book supplies the reader a realization that he/she is not the first, and that sex is a positive sign of living

Catcher in the Rye: see above, substitute "self-worth" for "sex"

George Polya: How to Solve It: practical applications, an informal but still solid means to approach solution techniques while keeping frustration in check

Charles Dodgson: Symbolic Logic: formal logic presented with Lewis Carroll's totally wicked syllogisms, for a realization that the truth can be extracted from any mess of language

Common Sense, The Rights of Man and Other Essential Writings of Thomas Paine

Jefferson: Political Writings (Cambridge Texts in the History of Political Thought)

What a wonderful thread. My suggestions are, for the most part, best read between high school and college. Not that a student will do much reading in that summer, but some of these titles are better not read too young:

Anything by Nabokov: specifically Lolita and Invitation to a Beheading
Anything by Vonnegut
Gore Vidal's satirical work: specifically Kalki
Brave New World (this one, especially shouldn't be read too young. I have seen it warp some young minds)
13 Days
Fast Food Nation and Freakonomics (must reads for everyone, as far as I am concerned)

and if a student is especially literarily daring

The Crying of Lot 49 by Thomas Pynchon

and (wait for it)

Revelation

Why, you ask? Revelation (John's Gospel ?) is a highly quoted piece of literature. Knowing it can only add to a persons ability to converse intelligently. Especially with the intellectual and pseudo intellectuals that populate a university.

I think there are few of these titles that will fall on a high school reading list. samuraib

The Ninth Wave by Eugene Burdick

Demian by Herman Hesse

Roughing It by Mark Twain

Robinson Crusoe by Daniel Defoe

The Year of the Angry Rabbit by Russell Braddon

The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas

Johnny Got His Gun
The Old Man and the Sea
Atlas Shrugged
Brave New World
On The Road
A Clockwork Orange
Call of the Wild
Cannery Row
In Cold Blood
Slaughterhouse Five
Gulliver's Travels
The World According to Garp
Ender's Game
Stranger in a Strange Land
A Confederacy of Dunces
Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance

OK, so I could go on forever...

Edit - and I don't care how many "Great Books" lists it is on, NO ONE should be forced to read Ulysses.  Or Faulkner.
