The United States Postal
Service will increase postal rates on May 14, 2007. To reflect these
changes, we will increase Marketplace shipping credits for Books,
Music, Movies, Video Games and Software, effective May 14th. The
increases will range from $0.39 to $2.51 depending upon the product
category and shipping method. In addition, we will implement modest
increases to the variable closing fees in these product lines.

A full list of the changes compared with today’s rates is set forth in the charts below. Here is a short summary of the changes:

1. The Books, Video Games and Software standard shipping credit will be increased from $3.49 to $3.99.

2. The Music, DVD and VHS standard shipping credit will increase from $2.59 to $2.98.

3. The Books, Video Games and Software variable closing fee will increase from $1.20 to $1.35.

4. The Music, DVD and VHS variable closing fee will be increased from $0.70 to $0.80.

Boy, $12.49 for international orders seems a bit much.  That should be a nice barrier to some buyers.

Marsin2010, how do I go back and edit out all of the heavy books that won't fit in USPS GP envelopes?

The loss of M-bags is going to hit hard here.

I still don't understand how much of these new fees the sellers will see. As I wrote the $2.59 for music has now been jumped to $2.98. When it was $2.59 sellers saw $1.89 for actual shipping. How much of the $2.98 do sellers actually get? Perhaps someone can scale that for all the shipping rates. It would be helpful.

It would help if you have them shelved together.  If so, just do it manually instead of trying to get fancy and, thus, wasting a bunch of lead time.  I would just do it one at a time.

Just subtract the new closing fee ($1.35) from the new compensation listed to get the actual (real world!) shipping credit.

It may seem steep, but it barely covers the cost of a flat rate GPM envelope ($14.49-$1.35 VCF= $11.14) which will be $11.00.  I would have raised my prices or not offered many books for international sale at all if this had not been done, so I don't think the Amazon fee increase is the cause for any barrier to buyers--the USPS rate increase coupled with elimination of economy letter post is the reason for any increased reluctance to purchase internationally.

Do the math.

The holdback (A) is listed the amount collected for shipping (B) is listed

Subtract Holdback from shipping to get seller amount (C).

B - A = C

Although I hate to look a gift horse in the mouth, they raised the shipping fees by $0.50, which well probably have a downward effect on sales.  They then increased the variable closing fee by $0.15, which means that although the new shipping reimbursement would have made the postage close to revenue neutral, the increased variable closing fee means we still lose a small amount per package, and Amazon ends up with a larger cut of every dollar we bring in.

And people call eBay FeeBay.

So if I'm reading this right....

Assuming I sell a book for a penny (which is the absolute rock-bottom amount we can sell anything in Marketplace), this is what the fees should look like:

Buyer's Price: $0.01

Amazon Commission: ($1.35)

Additional Shipping Credit: $3.99

Total Earnings: $2.65

******

Am I correct in this?

If so, its a little better than I expected from Amazon, but I'm still not certain if it will be enough. Guess I'll have to wait and see how it works in practice and I can get a better feel for how much I'm spending on stock versus how much I'm bringing in.

EDIT:

Hmm.  The new International rate is ALOT higher than I expected.  This might keep me here after all.

Yeah! Yippee! And all that other stuff.

Mass consciousness wins.

More money, we all win. We are mass consciousness.

Nice to hear about it now, rather than at the last minute.

I'm so happy.

No doubt about it this is good news.

Amazon thank you for putting up with us and our griping for more shipping credit

I'm still trying to get a grip on the international shipping matrix. I know the PO is doing away with the global surface but what other big changes are we going to see? And more importantly how expensive is it going to get?
