VHS or video sellers... Anyone considered halting international sales?

With the new $6.89 shipping credit for videos to international destinations, I've had three such orders this week and I don't like my options for fufilling them...
The one to Canada was fine... A light video that weighed under 8 oz shipped for $2.86, fair enough.
But to Europe or elsewhere we are losing tons of money.
12 oz to Spain is $8.80!!! 16 oz (heavy clamshell type video) to Britain is $10.40!!!
The international priority flat rate isn't much help at $10.45. I used to send nearly all my overseas orders at Global Priority flatrate for $5.25 and the shipping credit was right around $5. But now with the difference at over three dollars I don't think it is worth selling to international buyers, other than Canadian ones (who are getting screwed in their own way by having).
Amazon needs to be able to distinguish between North American orders and ones from further abroad and charge different rates. That or raise the international shipping rates the customer is being charged across the map. Can we mount some kind of formal protest? I don't know the channels for going about this.
Anyone other video merchants thinking about this? I know the new rates are different for Books, CDs, & DVDs, but I'd also like to hear what sellers of these think as well.....

It cost me $8.80 today to ship a video to the UK. I am pulling all my VHS tapes for international -- although I will add to listing "International buyers -- email me and I will adjust the price for you". I was thinking just now of doing exactly what you did -- adding this topic to the soapbox.

Unfortunately, with the new international shipping rates vs. the shipping credit we now receive from Amazon, I was forced to end all international sales as well. I believe that the rates were not fully researced by Amazon prior to the rate increases on Amazon. Standard VHS tapes weigh between 9oz and 12 oz. The cheapest rate for mailing to most international address, excluding Canada and Mexico, is $8.80. With the Amazon shipping credit of only $6.19 that leaves sellers holding the bag for over $2.50 on each international order. Can't see a way to make that work! If you sell VHS, please email Amazon with your concerns and ask them to raise the rate on shipping for international sales so this market can be served. Possibly, having a means to offer international sales to Canada only would be a big step. Ed

They know what they're doing. They could have different rates for Canada and Mexico vs. the rest of the world, but they just don't. Why they do it? Who knows. I just know they are purposefully shortchanging sellers on shipping credits, that's all I can gather.

By the way, you can get a neat listing of your VHS tapes by just doing an open listing search and putting "VHS" into the search box. I learned this the hard way (figured it out after manually going through most of my listings which are arranged by date)

One could make an argument that the $4.03 in additional postage received from the order to Canada is more than a reasonable handling fee, and that some of that excess compensates you for shipping losses to other countries. Although as a Canadian who buys stuff on .com, I'm tired of getting overcharged by Amazon with that logic. You have to decide if the losses on international shipping to certain countries are worth taking to get the sales, and the more profitable sales to customers in North America. If they're not, then the correct business decision is obvious. Michael PS You can try posting here/emailing Amazon and complaining about it, but I wouldn't make that my only plan, or hold my breath for them to change their mind

More buyers for me! Seriously, I am setting a lower limit of $10 to turn on International for CDs and VHS. This way I know the sale is netting me substantial profit to help offset the loss on shipping. The ones between $5 and $10 are only available for International. Anything below $5 is only set for Standard Shipping and will either be sold or culled by the end of the year. Got to do what you got to do to adjust to the changes! John

What is crazy is that the dvd compensation for a 5 ounce package is like $12. I haven't decided, the latest stuff I listed I did not list for international sales. With my reduced vhs inventory and sales, I only sell a handful each month overseas anyway...I will probably just phase out international shipping on vhs...but keep it for dvd and cd, which is about 99% or more of my international sales anyway.

They could have different rates for Canada and Mexico vs. the rest of the world, but they just don't. I lost a sale because of this. Just yesterday I received an email from a prospective buyer asking if I would ship a book to Canada. I'd gladly sell this book to a Canadian buyer, but didn't list it for international because shipping it to other countries would be very expensive. Dale

There is no reason why Amazon can not set up differernt rates for different countries. Below is the shipping rate chart for Amazon.UK Note that the rate for shipping videos to America is about $9.80 while to the rest of the world from the UK is about $11.00. Rates are listed in UK pounds. Please email suggestions@Amazon.com and ask for similar treatment. Ed | UK | European Union Amazon Payments countries* | US (including US protectorates) | Rest of World Amazon Payments countries* | | Books (includes audio books) | 2.75 | 3.94 | 6.94 | 7.00 | | CDs | 1.24 | 1.79 | 3.08 | 3.58 | | Videos | 2.75 | 3.94 | 4.94 | 5.94 | | DVD | 1.24 | 1.79 | 3.08 | 3.58 |
