SA - Listing IDs and SKUs!!

In the past the Listing ID has been the primary identifier for each item available for sale on the Amazon Marketplace. However, many new features and services now use SKUs to identify listings. In the near future we will begin to use SKUs as the primary identifier throughout Marketplace and require that all listings have a SKU. Listing tools such as Sell Yours Here and Sell An Item will require a SKU. If you do not provide a SKU (or are not asked to provide one), we will simply supply one. Pro-Merchants already must have a SKU to upload files.
Once all listings have a SKU, we may retire Listing ID as a public identifier, and we are interested in understanding any issues that may result. Please send any feedback you might have to listing-id-feedback@amazon.com.
For more information about SKUs please refer to our Help information: http://www.amazon.com/gp/help/customer/display.html?nodeId=1161340#sku

Talk about a STOOPID idea! I can see several ways that eliminating the listing ID will not work!

Well, for one thing, people's SKU's could easily bump heads. If someone chooses to designate a SKU that indicates where the book is stored and another person wants the same SKU,then what? We've never used the SKU system, filing things alphabetically. Now with ~every~ 3P seller being forced to use SKU,I can just see a whole can of worms being opened. Guess we'll see.Have no idea what the sinister reason is for doing this. As if there weren't enough problems.

I would imagine that there would be no problem with different users having identical SKUs, since they have always been meaningful only within a specific seller's account. They can be as simple as a sequential number, starting at any point (I recommend 1000, to avoid the dropped leading zero problems in spreadsheets). If you want, you can build all sorts of information into your own SKUs. See my old post about that. This is probably Amazon's starting volley for the massive bunch of changes they have this time each year, apparently to cause maximum interference with Holiday sales. The don't want us getting too rich. Tom

"since they have always been meaningful only within a specific seller's account" Yeah, in the past, but now, if the SKU is to become a platform wide identifier, there is no way that heads won't be bumping somewhere when listing ID's disappear.

Unless the platform identifier is a concatenation of your seller id and sku. This could be handled internally.

If this is truly going to happen, it would be rather helpful to have 'live' data boxes on the SKU column of the Open Listing display pages like the 'price' and 'quantity' columns currently have.

Right now you can't even close the listing, and relist inserting a sku. You can change the condition when you relist, but you can't add or change a sku.

Does this mean we have to totally unlist every item and relist as if it was a new listing? That would be a hell of a lot of work for even a very small seller like me. ME

Unfortunately for me, I organize my inventory by the date I entered it. That date is reflected in the listing id and has been so helpful to me - I find it much easier than alphabetizing. Of course, I only list about 100 things a day so that works out good for me. Now that they are getting rid of the listing id's I am going to have a devil of a time locating items. I better start working on this straight away!

Everyone should immediately start using the response link in the OP to request that 'live' data boxes be added to the SKU column of the Open Listings page equivalent to that in the 'quantity' and 'price' columns.

In theory (ahem) a company could create a hassle then provide the solution for a small percentage of a persons sales each month. Of course this would never happen......

All sites use their own ID for server mgmt
I;m sure many list SKU's sequentially - so I feel inventory will be overwritten constantly
I may start a duplicate list for this purpose

It would seem that the current listing ID could simply be renamed the SKU for those who have not assigned one. For those who have, their actual SKU would continue to apply.
