Merging Duplicate Book ASINs
Posted: Nov 12, 2007 2:31 PM

In order to provide Amazon customers with a better discovery and shopping experience, duplicate ASINs for the same books will be merged beginning on November 13, 2007.  This will mean that sellers will not have to list on multiple single detail pages that refer to the same product.

ASINs will be merged when a duplicate ASIN is detected.  This will result in all merchant product data, image data, offers and seller listings for one ASIN (the “merged” ASIN) being transferred over to a second ASIN (the “retained” ASIN). The first ASIN will no longer be viewable on the Amazon.com website. We will make a concerted effort to retain the ASIN that has a higher sales ranking and more merchants using it.

If a listing in an inventory loader feed refers to the first ASIN after the merge, the listing will be assigned to the second or retained ASIN.  A warning will be displayed in the processing report and the new ASIN will be identified.  You should verify that the new ASIN correctly identifies the product you are selling and use the new ASIN in subsequent uploads.  You will not have to make any other change to your feeds.

In rare instances, you may believe that an incorrect merge has occurred.  If you believe an incorrect merge has occurred, contact Seller Support and include the original ASIN and the new ASIN in your correspondence.

This ought to be fun.

Tom

Sharon just said that is how confused credit files were created at Equifax, combining files together that shouldn't be combined.  So we can now eagerly await ASIN's for completely unrelated titles being forced together. This should be so entertaining....NOT!

Uh oh.  Bye bye Holiday sales for some.  Hardly any warning either.

This will cause a lot of problems with items not as listed.

Ouch.  Why now?

Do they not realize they are screwing with FBA sellers?

I was just reading this on the Seller Success board - can't help wondering how many books will just disappear - or be "incorrectly" merged, further plunging them into that black hole known as NONE AVAILABLE - try your search again.

Jingle bells jingle bells, Azon's run amok!
Oh what pain, it is to sell, when the sites is all f#$%ed up! Ohhh!
Jingle bells jingle bells, here comes a'nother event.
Planned or not, it sure will stop, my books from selling now!

Given Amazons past history this is bound to be a cluster F*** but let's face it they can hardly screw it up worse than it is now with twenty different catalog pages for the identical book. Just be ready to relist half your books that get lost in the shuffle. Hell I'm not selling anything anyway.

Bye Anna. Stick your banana where the sun don't shine.

They may just as well pull the plug on 3p sellers.  Those with large inventories are going to be sooo messed up.

I guess I'll print my inventory so that I have something with which to check the changes. I am not a Pro-Merchant anymore.  Those that are may need to get an inventory report STAT.

This is really going to hurt those that have a lot listed by ASIN.

And just before the Holidays....

It's a great idea in principle, but execution seems likely to stir up big trouble.

Oy Vey! Now that I have finished downloading my open listing report, I suggest that everyone else do so as well.

Could Am choose a worse time to do this? (rhetorical) samuraib

Possibly on Thursday, November 22 at midnight - that could be a little worse - but not much I fear!

What does this mean? What is a processing report?  How will this affect AOB users?

Clear as mud isn't it - and that announcement is so innocently tucked away on the Seller Success board - LOL

Those of us who use Amazon's uploaders get a report on the upload, with rejected items listed. I have no idea how AOB handles failed items.
