With hundreds of millions of Americans buying cars every year, I have a feeling if Ford and GM went under SOMEONE would still be building and selling cars.
I for one have never liked the GAME of buying a new car. I can drive off the lot with a new car and pay $2000 more or less than the guy behind me that bought the same car. Maybe that is part of their problem??

Why would you pay $2000 more than the other guy? There are plenty of resources that let you know what the cost of the vehicle is and with just a little research you can go in and give a low but profitable offer. If they do not accept go elsewhere. Especially in this market there is no shortage of deals. I have researched the places that put the price on the window and that is the price you pay when I purchased my last vehicle. I am sure it would not surprise you that it was ALWAYS higher that what could be negotiated elsewhere. I saved several thousand dollars by buying elsewhere. If someone is foolish enough to spend more than they need to then the story about a fool and his money is true.

With hundreds of millions of Americans buying cars every year There's only 300 million Americans period. You think 2/3s of all Americans buy a new car every year? LOL

I haven't bought a new car since 1991. Since then I've bought used cars with less than 30,000 miles on them, paid cash for them, and drove them till I can't buy parts. The last car I bought was 18 months old, had 28,000 miles on it, and I paid roughly 60% what I would have had to pay for a new one. Not 60% of list, 60% of what I could have gotten it for, and it still had part of the factory warranty left. Automakers don't like me, they'd like everyone to buy a new car every few years on the theory that the new cars are so much more reliable than the ones a few years old. Cars last much longer than the car companies want people to realize. I've never had a car where the repairs on an annual basis came to anything close to the payments on a similar new car, and I've driven cars with over 300,000 miles on them. I do maintain the cars I own, and if you do that they'll run a long time. With hundreds of millions of Americans buying cars every year, I have a feeling if Ford and GM went under SOMEONE would still be building and selling cars.

I remember on Charlie Rose or some other late night news - and the clip was shown all over at the time - an Auto Exec stating fuel efficient cars are bad for the US economy
Reap what you sew
If you invest you are told [Charles Ponds, Suzy whatsit etc] to "diversify investment" Medicine, food, electronincs etc - so there is always a part of your portfolio making money.
We should do the same with our economy 1 in 10 jobs Auto industry related - way way too high. Cars "in their current form" are a bane.
www.gemcar.com
This car has better performance than the Volt a lower cost and further range.

GEM e2 Specifications Curb Weight 1,140 lbs GVW 1,850 lbs Payload Capacity 710 lbs* Length 99" Height 70" Width 55" Wheelbase 72" Cubic Feet of Cab 47 ft Turning Circle 24 ft Tires 12-inch street-rated Range Up to 35 miles Top Speed (High Mode) 25 mph Top Speed (Low Mode) 15 mph *Options + Passengers + Cargo

This should be mandated for Urban Motoring - not Dino JuiceMobiles
Charges from House Current -Use a Windmill or Solar Panels and you have it all beat.

Thats what I liked about the Saturn when my wife bought one about 5 years ago. The price was the same for one and all. Saturn's are good cars, my only problem with them was they start to burn oil at 50,000 miles, and the engine gets noisier as it ages. As far as the YUGO, no big lose to the world.

In a YugoAs the snow flies
At a used car lot on the edge of town A liberal guy and a liberal gal Buy a Yugo
And they drive with pride
Cause if there's one thing that this world needs It's environmental friends who'll take the lead In a Yugo
They say, "people don't you understand Those suburbans are ruining the land" But they'll wish they had a full size van one day They point fingers at you and me They say we're too blind to see But do we simply use our heads And choose another way?
As those small wheels turn Fifty miles to the gallon And their knees on their chest They're gonna save enough gas For all of the rest In a Yugo
Then one day on the interstate They suddenly lose control They swerve to miss a baby duck They're squashed beneath a produce truck
But they drove with pride...
And as the crowds drive past a little flat car You know they saved a lot of gas But they didnt get far In a Yugo
And as they're trapped inside At a used car lot on the other side of town A liberal guy and a liberal gal Buy a Yugo....
And they drive with pride...

Nothing to worry about. I just listed a big stack of Chilton repair manuals. We'll just keep the old ones running.

I think the Cubans have perfected that, with or without Chiltons!

Thanks!
I remember visiting Uruguay in the 1980s ago and seeing many (American) cars still running that were from the 1950's. It can be done.
In many countries, Mercedes Benz is the preferred car for most taxi owners. As an American, I was surprised, but it is apparently cost effective because MB builds cars that, if well cared for, can last forever.

I have never understood this idea of a bailout for domestic car makers. They are one of the oldest continuing industries in the United States. After nearly 100 years, if they can't run their business profitably they need to close.
What it comes down to is they have been doing this for 100 years and they want to take money from people like us that are just starting our business and give it to them? Remember, it's not government money, IT'S OUR MONEY!
The legacy cost in a General Motors vehicle is more than $2100.00. That means if you buy a new car, $2100.00+ goes to pay people who did absolutely nothing to build your car. Some haven't worked at the factory for 15-20 years but are still getting paid.
