CHARGE WHEN SHIP - New process in sales/payments

Oh boy - here we go.
I have a question regarding a tracking number. I do not use online postage, so I do not have a tracking # to give the buyer.
Can someone explain where I get a tracking # when I buy postage at the post office? I do not plan on buying DC on all orders either.
I wonder if this is Amazon's way of nudging everyone into buying postage online. Or maybe I'm just missing the solution (I hope!).
Thanks in advance for any answers, ideas, opinions & suggestions.

If you don't get DC, the only other tracking options are more expensive.
Anna
EDIT - Oh, and you don't need tracking for this. :-)

Thank you - I know that.
I have no intention of purchasing DC (or anything more expensive) on every single order. I reserve that for the higher priced orders.
My question is can I "confirm" without putting in a tracking number at all? I know many sellers use online postage (which gives a tracking #) but not everyone does - including myself.
Diana
Didn't see your edit until after I posted the above - sorry. Where does it say you don't need a tracking #. I must have missed that. Thanks!

Well I suggest you start. You can buy delivery confirmation at the post office. It's a little green slip with a bar code and numbers on it. It costs 75 cents. Buy that and transcribe numbers. Simple.
With online postage, it costs only 18 cents and you can copy and paste it.
Stamps.com is $14.99 a mo. The question is how many orders you ship. Or Endicia.

Bigmouth,
I am glad you like online postage. There are many reasons why I might not be using online postage (or others who don't).
I asked a specific question - I guess you don't have the answer.
Thanks anyway.
P.S. Oh, so that's what that little green slip is for........?

Dale,
Thanks so much - my home computer doesn't have audio, so I didn't click on the link.
Much appreciated,
Diana

I've just seen my little notice and have a few quick observations:
Buyer makes order on Thursday night, cancels credit card on Sunday morning and I ship the order on Monday morning, confirm shipment Monday evening. Is there some safeguard to keep this from happening?
Do I confirm shipment when I print the shipping label or after I drop the order off or with the carrier? Probably after the order leaves my possession. That means I have to go back through the queue of orders at the end of the day and confirm shipment. It is much easier to send confirmations as I am making labels.
If you don't use delivery confirmation will the system allow you to confirm without tracking info input? I always have tracking but I know some do not.
There is a drop down menu for the carrier but you have to type in the service used. USPS should have MM, 1st Class, Priority etc. as drop down choices if that carrier is selected. Same for all other carriers.
That's all I can think of so far but I'm sure other questions will come to me as I use the system.
It may not be a bad thing once I get used to it. It does not look like I have a choice.
Sorry, I posted this to the wrong thread. Message was edited by: appa12

What's your problem? You asked how to get a tracking number at the post office. That's how. If you are so dim that you know what DC is but still want a tracking number, then I don't know what to tell you.

A DC number is not a tracking number.
Thank you for your help anyway.

Really??
You really are a smart one. You think that the post office has something resembling a tracking number that isn't DC. Doesn't matter what you call it, that's all they got.
Have fun with the new system. I just looked at the 'charge when ship; screen. You may not be able to 'confirm item shipped' without DC, so goodluck

Horrible. Horrible. Horrible.
What about cases where, there's a standard speed order expected to arrive in 4-14, it goes out a week after the order but with first-class speed, and arrives in 10? Thats an A-Z claim waiting to happen isn't it, because it didnt go out in 2 days. But you know there will be a double standard for mega-sellers and drop-shippers who don't ship in 2 days.
Also, DC cost. If your average sale is $8 and suddenly there's a .75 per sale extra cost, that's a significant percent off your income. Stamps.com for the .18 cost? But what if you don't want that subscription and all the extra printing, supplies, etc. When I used it, I hated it- I found the biggest costs were in misprinted postage and wasting excessive time doing claims for it, if the misprint even was claimable (weren't for printer jams.) This makes it that much harder to be able to sell lower profit books on your own without the volume efficiency of large sellers.
This is a hit against the smallest sellers, taking away a great deal of flexibility. Even if you keep 100% rating the way you work now you won't be able to work your way any more. Score for mega sellers and corporate power.

There's no excuse for not shipping on time. You agreed to it, you should do it.
Also, DC cost.
There's no DC cost involved here. If you use DC or other tracking, you enter the number. If you don't use it, you don't enter it. No cost change.
I don't think is the the big deal people seem to be making it out to be. In essence, all they're doing is forcing us to send shipping notifications by not paying us until we do. Carrot... stick...

...except that's the entire business model of many mega-sellers. You know the mega sellers who take orders, then source them. Is amazon going to cut off it's own biggest profit? There will be a double standard against small sellers.
What if you CAN'T ship on time, yet you can get it to the customer on time? Nope, you don't have that ability any more if it has to go out in 2 days. A CD/DVD seller goes on vacation, turns his inventory back on in the middle, then he comes home and ships everything out first class to meet the delivery deadline: not any more.

of course it is a hit against the small sellers. Amazon has the goal to be the biggest internet company. They didnt like all the freedom we had on their site. Now they have us by the b---. its going to be a nightmare and what made amazon work sorta was the freedom. I dont want constant interaction and button pushing and I am over spending anyway . I am not getting more gadgets and gismos to prove anything to amazon. also in the past when I have had a dishonest customer I was able to email them and let them know that I was filing a police report with the police next door to them. This wont be possible now. amazon has not shown itself to be on the side of sellers when customers were dishonest. I dont know what value we have to them but they certainly dont want us as free agents.
